Research: I am a historian of infectious disease and am interested in the history of public health surveillance and pharmaceutical research and development (R&D). My research explores the evolution of international disease surveillance and how societies have managed or failed to control fast- and slow-moving outbreaks like cholera, plague, and typhoid since 1945. I am particularly interested in how the advent of genomics and biotechnology has changed the way we conduct research on vaccines and antibiotics and roll them out in the field.
